Tis The Season Festival 2022 Chili Cook Off & Car Show
December 3, 2022 – 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Chili Cook Off Rules and Registration

Contestants Will Provide:

  1. Tent
  2. Cooking device such as camp stove or propane burner, cook pot and serving utensils
  3. Full size serving bowls and spoons and/or take home containers if selling chili after
    competition ends
  4. Minimum of 3 gallons of chili prepared on site (more recommended)
  5. Decorations of tent display (optional)
  6. List of ingredients to avoid possible allergy reactions
  7. Name of Team and Chili with heat level as mild, medium or hot

Community Thrift Store Will Provide:

  1. Free Taste Card for entrants (up to 4 per entry)
  2. 6 foot table and 2 chairs
  3. 1 oz. sample serving cups, spoons and napkins
  4. Hole punch for taste card marking
  5. People’s Choice taste cards and vote jug
  6. Trash receptacles and bags

Set Up and Tear Down

Set up must be completed by 9:00 a.m. with chili cooked on site. Meat may be precooked. If using dried beans, beans may be precooked. All other preparations must be done on site. Chili must be ready for tasting by festival guests by 11:00 a.m. Tear down will not start prior to the end of Festival at 3:00 p.m. All contestants are responsible for cleaning their area and putting trash in designated waste receptacles.

Tasting Cards

Guests will be offered a taste card for $5 adult, $2.50 for children which will give them one taste cup per chili entry. Please punch card next to your chili name to help avoid multiple tastings from the same guest. These cards will then be marked by guests with their favorite and placed in jugs which will be at each entry’s table. Taste Cards may be
used from 11:00 – 1:00. At that time, People’s Choice is ended, and jugs will be collected for determining winner.

Selling Chili

Contestants may offer their chili in full size servings once the People’s Choice cards are no longer used after 1:00. Price for servings are up to you. CTS will be giving away free hot dogs and drinks. Food vendors will be invited to sell complimentary items such as funnel cakes, cotton candy etc.


Judges will observe contestant tents prior to sampling the chili. At that time, they will score independently the contestant with best showmanship. This will be based on creativity, crowd interaction and overall display. Sample cups of each contestant will be taken to the judging tent, starting at 1:00 p.m. The samples will be given numbers for scoring to ensure blind tasting and a fair competition. There will be five (5) judges who will determine winning entries based on color, aroma, consistency, taste, and after taste. Each category will be rated on a scale of 1-10. The total scores from all judges will be combined to determine winners.


Note… A minimum of 5 entries in each category will be required for competition. Should less enter the chili cook off competition, those who entered will be refunded their entry fee after entry deadline of November 21. Award presentation will be made at 2:00 on stage. Back yard Chef Individual or Team and Business/Restaurant Divisions will both be awarded as follows:

1st Place – $500 and Trophy
2nd Place – $200 and Plaque
3rd Place – $100 and Plaque
People’s Choice Award – Trophy & Bragging Rights
Showmanship Award – Framed Certificate & Special Gift

All winners will be highlighted in the Pickens Progress, Know Pickens News sites, and Pickens Community Thrift Store Website and Facebook.

Thank you for entering our Chili cook-off competition as part of our Tis The Season Festival. Monies raised from this event will be given to our local senior center. As a chili contestant, you can deduct the costs of chili and registration fee on your taxes since CTS is a 501C3 nonprofit organization. We look forward to meeting each of you and tasting your fabulous chili. May the best team win.
